Cypress Lakes Resort, incorporating Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club is located in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley. Built in the highest hills in the lower Hunter Valley, with spectacular views over the surrounding vineyards, it's centrepiece is the magnificent Cypress Lakes golf course, an 18 hole, par 72 Championship course (6359 metres).
Founded by Dr Peter Neustadt and completed in 1992, Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club course has one of Australia's longest par five holes (573 metres) a unique dual fairway hole and one of the only holes in Australia where you have to tee off straight over a vineyard.
Designed by American golf course designer Steve Smyers in conjunction with Australian Golfing legend Bob Stanton, the course boasts distinct styles, with the first nine holes built around the hills and valleys overlooking surrounding vineyards and the second nine holes are built on lower plains in the traditional links style.
Architecture Magazine reported the following in 1997
Cox Richardson (now Cox Architects) have completed the first stage of a five-star golf and tennis resort set on 340 acres near Pokolbin in NSW’s Hunter Valley wine district. The scheme’s focus is a lakeside clubhouse, designed in the region’s favoured homestead style and incorporating a ground floor health centre, pro shops and a beauty salon, and first-floor restaurants and bars linked by a north-eastern balcony overlooking floodlit tennis courts. Around this complex is being built a “linear village” of for-hire townhouses and apartments offset beside meandering roads.
